Stanley "Grunkle Stan" Pines
Stanley Pines grew up with his twin brother, Stanford Pines in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. His dad owned a pawn shop while his mom was a pathological liar, and a fake psychic. Stan had a decent childhood. He frequently explored the beach with his brother and found many unique treasures, such as an old boat which they fixed up over the years and dubbed “the Stan o’ war”. Everything seemed to be going fine until his brother got accepted into one of the best colleges in the country, West Coast Tech. Somewhat out of spite, Stan accidently ruined Stanford’s chances of making it into West Coast Tech, and was kicked out of the house. Stan then roamed the country in his car as a travelling salesman. He sold faulty products which eventually got him banned from many states. Naturally, he changed his identity countless times. After 10 years, Stanford sent him a postcard saying that he needs to come to Gravity Falls. When he finally arrived, he is greeted with a less than warm welcome. Stanford said that he needed him in Gravity Falls because he was one of the few people he could trust; he made a dangerous interdimensional portal and he directions of how to operate it were hidden is his three journals, two of which he already hid. He gives the first journal to Stan, then tells him to leave, which makes Stan very angry. He threatens to burn the journal, but Stanford says that he can’t because it’s his life’s work. They eventually end up fighting in the portal’s control room, turning the portal on in the process. Stan then shoves both the journal and Stanford into the portal, but Stanford is able to throw him the journal before he gets trapped. For the next thirty years, Stan tries to find the other two journals so he can reopen the portal and free his brother.
Stan has always been one half of a dynamic duo: Stanford is the brains, but he is the brawn. In the episode “Scary-oke,” He uses a baseball bat, and later brass knuckles, to defend Dipper and Mabel from a horde of zombies that Dipper “accidently” summoned. That brings up another point; Family. Stan has always put his family before himself. In the episode “Land before Swine,” Stan beats up a pterodactyl just to retrieve Mabel’s beloved pet pig: Waddles. Plus, there is Stan’s famous quote from the episode “Not what he seems”: “Everything I’ve ever done, everything I’ve worked for, is for this family.
Stan has appeared in almost every episode.
