Stanford Pines
Even though Stanford has only physically been in the past 8 episodes, he has been mentioned (as “The author of the Journals” or “The Author”), and his journals have impacted the entire series.
Stanford Pines grew up with his twin brother, Stanley Pines in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey. His dad owned a pawn shop while his mom was a pathological liar, and a fake psychic. Ford had a decent childhood, besides the fact that he was frequently bullied for having 6 fingers both of his hands, he loved to explore the beach with his brother to find treasures, such as an old boat which they fixed up over the years and dubbed “the Stan o’ war.” Ford’s life was going great, and it only got better when his science project, a perpetual motion machine, got him accepted into one of the best colleges in the country; West Coast Tech. When Stan found out about this, he accidently breaks Ford’s project, which ruins his chances into getting into West Coast Tech. Because of this, Stanley gets kicked out, and Ford ends up going to a more affordable college, Backupsmore University (with mostly bug free dorms). After graduating 3 years ahead of schedule, he gets a research grant, and begins to study anomalies in Gravity Falls, where he starts keeping his research in a series of journals. After a couple years of researching, he hits a roadblock in his studies. One day, when he was exploring a cave when he found a strange incantation on the cave’s wall about a being with answers. Ford read the incantation aloud, which summoned the mind demon Bill Cipher. Bill tells Ford that he is a “muse” and to complete his studies, he needs to build a portal to the dimension where all of the anomalies are coming from. Because he was desperate, Ford agreed to build the portal. Over the next few years, he builds the portal with his college friend, the brilliant mechanic, Fiddleford McGucket. When the time finally came to test the portal, Fiddleford stepped over the safety line, and saw a glimpse of what was on the other side, which traumatized him in seconds. At that point, Ford realizes that Bill was just manipulating him for Bill’s selfish and diabolical needs. Ford then shuts the portal down and hides his journals so nobody can finish what he started. He decides to give the portal to the last person he could trust; his brother, Stanley. When Ford hands the journal over, he tells Stanley to take it and sail as far away from him as possible so he can bury it where nobody can find it. Stanley finds this offensive, and says that if he now owns the journal, he can do what he pleases with it, so he threatens to burn it. Ford does not want Stan to burn his life’s work, so he starts to fight him for the journal, turning the portal on in the process. They make their way back out of the control room, and that’s when Stan accidently pushes Ford into the portal. Ford throws the journal at the last second before he is trapped in another dimension for 30 years.
Stanford pines is the world’s most gullible genius. Even though he was able to create a fully-working perpetual motion machine in his senior year of high school and graduated from college 3 years early, he still fell for Bill’s trickery. Ford also tries to be a hero, even though he really just is a damsel in distress. In the episode, “Not what he seems,” Ford gets pushed into the portal, and Stanley has to save him. Plus, in the episode “Weirdmageddon Part 1,” Ford refuses to join Bill and his henchmen, so he turns him into a golden backscratcher. Dipper, Mabel, and Stanley will most likely will have to save him (we don’t know for sure because the series finale hasn’t aired yet). Even though Ford can be arrogant, he still sort of cares about his family. In the episode “Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons,” Ford stops his research to play the Gravity Falls equivalent of Dungeons and Dragons: Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons.
