Dipper Pines
Twelve-year-old Dipper Pines, whose nickname comes from the Big Dipper shaped birthmark on his forehead, is one of the main protagonists in Gravity Falls. He lives in Piedmont, California with his twin sister, Mabel Pines. Dipper comes to Gravity Falls in the beginning of the summer of 2012 when his parents said that he and Mabel needed some “Fresh Air”.
Dipper has a personality somewhat similar to the one of the cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz. They both are awkward, timid, and lack courage in almost all situations except for when a loved one is in danger. One thing that sets Dipper apart from the Cowardly Lion is his brains. In the episode, “The Time Traveler’s Pig” he is seen doing calculus, something that most people don’t learn or understand until high school or college. Some people say that is personality is very similar to that of his Great Uncle, Stanford Pines. Yes, it is true that both of them are very smart and have a love of anomalies, but there is one thing that sets them apart; Dipper cares more about his family than his obsession with the paranormal. In the episode “Gideon Rises” he jumps off of a cliff and breaks through a glass window on a giant robot to save his sister from Gideon Gleeful, the fake child psychic. Also, in countless episodes he sacrifices his own, somewhat selfish, needs for the ones of his sister, Mabel.
Dipper appears in every episode so far.
